ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — The Helene Survivors Committee is holding a press conference in Asheville on Friday, Aug. 29, claiming people are facing evictions due to FEMA ending a housing assistance program six months early, according to the committee’s press release.
The press conference was in downtown Asheville at Pack Square Park at 5 p.m.
According to the committee’s press release sent at 2:38 p.m. on Aug. 29, residents are facing evictions from FEMA for different reasons. Saying one resident was evicted because a housing assistance program is ending early, while another was told they had violated agreements.
HELENE VICTIMS FACE END OF FEMA HOUSING PROGRAM ON MARCH 7
“Several community members have been identified as having either already been evicted or are facing eviction from their apartments due to the ending of FEMA assistance. But there may be many more who are dealing with the same situation,” according to the press release.
The committee feels that city, county and state officials should provide resources immediately to those facing FEMA evictions.
“They knew this was going on; people have been getting evicted; it’s a disgrace and shame what they’ve been doing to us as Americans. My concern is, where are we going to go? We have nowhere else to go. It’s not fair and it’s not right to the citizens of WNC – it shouldn’t be happening,” said Lenora Wells, a member of the Helene Survivors Committee and resident facing eviction from FEMA, said in the press release.
