The Odisha government is set to launch affordable housing in Bhubaneswar, with prices kicking off at ₹14 lakh. Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra shared this news on Sunday during the Local Self-Governance Day celebrations.
He mentioned that the initiative aims to alleviate the strain of high property prices in the state capital, where homes frequently exceed ₹1 crore. “A lot of families from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) struggle to buy houses in Bhubaneswar. To tackle this issue, the government has decided to build and offer affordable housing,” he stated.
In the initial phase, the scheme will focus on EWS beneficiaries before it expands to include Middle-Income Group (MIG) families. The housing units will be priced between ₹14 lakh and ₹50 lakh as part of the Greater Bhubaneswar, Better Bhubaneswar initiative. The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and the Odisha State Housing Board will carry out the project in phases using a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with tenders already issued.
Construction has already started at multiple sites, and the first set of houses is expected to be delivered soon. Previously, on August 21, Mahapatra mentioned that homes priced between ₹15 lakh and ₹50 lakh were being distributed through a lottery system. Officials also noted that similar housing projects will eventually be rolled out to other urban local bodies (ULBs) and fast-growing cities throughout Odisha.
