Lee County has reopened applications for its Hurricane Housing Recovery Program, which aids families still grappling with Hurricane Ian’s aftermath.
The program, known as LeeCares, targets low and moderate-income property owners whose income does not exceed 80% of the annual median income as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Applications are open until December 31, but residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
Assistant County Manager Glen Salyer shared in a statement to WINK News about the county’s commitment to recovery efforts.
“Lee County continues to use Hurricane Ian recovery funding from HUD to rebuild damaged homes, develop new affordable housing, and construct public infrastructure,” Salyer said. He noted that more than 500 households are receiving assistance, including 50 new cases since reopening the application window.
“If your residence was damaged by a hurricane and you need help, contact LeeCares to find out if you are eligible for the program. Visit our website or call us today,” Salyer said.
The program has already provided more than $38 million in repairs, reconstruction and replacements for 235 homeowners.
Nathaniel, a San Carlos Park resident, shared his experience during Hurricane Ian.
“The whole neighborhood was like underwater for a little bit and then down this way…you couldn’t even drive down there for four hours.”
He expressed optimism about the program, “I think that’s a good idea.”
Residents impacted by Hurricane Ian can reach out to LeeCares through several methods.

They can call 239-382-5453, email leecares@leegov.com or visit the LeeCares Case Management office at 9400 Gladiolus Drive, Suite 270, Fort Myers, Florida, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The LeeCares website has eligibility requirements and other information.
