The quest for more affordable homes in Maui County is ongoing, and the local Department of Housing has put out a call for fresh solutions. They’re looking for applications to fund new projects through the Affordable Housing Fund for the fiscal year 2027. These projects should pack a punch in terms of providing spaces for families not exceeding 140% of the County’s median family income, according to a recent announcement on the county’s official website.
It’s an all-are-welcome invite: public agencies, private nonprofit organizations, private for-profit entities, and community land trusts can all throw their hats in the ring. Applicants should note that the county is zeroing in on project readiness, which entails having site control and completing necessary environmental reviews, as substantial factors in the evaluation process.
There’s an added incentive for projects that go the extra mile. If your proposal takes on off-site infrastructure requirements, or if it’s earmarked for those earning 81-140% of the Area Median Income, or better yet, if it involves housing on county-owned land, you could snag some additional points.
The numbers suggest the program’s no small fry: just last fiscal year, the Affordable Housing Fund doled out nearly $58 million, sparking the development of over 1,000 housing units across Maui County. Scrutinize those plans and gather your documents; applications open at the County Housing Programs Division’s office and online starting September 19, 2025.
All submissions must be in the hands of the County Housing Programs Division by 4 p.m. HST on October 20, 2025 – no ifs, ands or buts. Whether by hand-delivery, the trusty postal service, or a swift email, they’ve got to be on time. The Affordable Housing Fund’s established track record ensures it’s a serious player in fostering affordable housing ventures that range from renovating existing buildings to acquiring land and from the initial planning to the final construction phase.
