Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will soon roll out affordable housing in Bhubaneswar, with prices starting at ₹14 lakh. Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced the initiative on Sunday during Local Self-Governance Day celebrations.
Mahapatra said the scheme is aimed at easing the burden of high property prices in the state capital, where homes often cost over ₹1 crore. “Many families from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) cannot afford houses in Bhubaneswar. To address this, the government has decided to construct and provide affordable housing,” he said.
In its first phase, the scheme will cater to EWS beneficiaries before expanding to Middle-Income Group (MIG) families. Housing units will range between ₹14 lakh and ₹50 lakh under the Greater Bhubaneswar, Better Bhubaneswar initiative.
The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and Odisha State Housing Board will execute the project in phases under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with tenders already floated.
Construction has already begun at several sites, with the first batch of houses expected to be handed over soon. Earlier, on August 21, Mahapatra had said homes priced between ₹15 lakh and ₹50 lakh were being allotted through a lottery system.
Officials added that similar housing projects will later be extended to other urban local bodies (ULBs) and rapidly growing cities across Odisha.
