In June, the Salinas City Council voted to repeal four critical tenant protection laws rent stabilization, just cause eviction, tenant anti-harassment, and the rental registry. These protections were designed to hold predatory landlords accountable and give renters a fair shot at stability in a city where most people rent, not own.The city council accepted a petition with over 10,000 signatures, more than enough to legally require a referendum against the council’s repeal. “There were over 10,000 residents that there wanted to keep the rent stabilization, tenant protections on just evictions and a rental registry in place,” Wes White, a Salinas resident, said. “Even people who are working full time are still the rent is getting out of out of out of pace,” they added. The city council will next consider the issue on September 9, when they will vote to decide between repealing their own repeal ordinance and restoring tenant protections immediately or putting it to a vote, which would cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars for a special election.

In June, the Salinas City Council voted to repeal four critical tenant protection laws rent stabilization, just cause eviction, tenant anti-harassment, and the rental registry.
These protections were designed to hold predatory landlords accountable and give renters a fair shot at stability in a city where most people rent, not own.
The city council accepted a petition with over 10,000 signatures, more than enough to legally require a referendum against the council’s repeal.
