GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Pitt Community College and the City of Greenville are coming together to build affordable housing for the Greenville community.
The 50-in-10 Affordable Housing Initiative launched this morning with a groundbreaking at the first construction site, donated by the city, on Davis and Cherry streets.
The Pitt students who are in the college’s construction program have always built houses within the program, but now, instead of auctioning them off, they’ll go on sites like the one where the initiative was launched today and help provide the community with more accessible, affordable housing.
The goal of the 50-in-10 program is to build 50 new affordable homes in the next 10 years.
Pitt Community College President Maria Pharr says that the college and the students are excited for the partnerships and funding that have helped make this happen.
“The students are very excited because you know there’s more than what they learn in the classroom,” Pharr told WITN. “This is about saying you know, we are building homes, we’re going to know where they’re located, we can drive through the neighborhoods and say I was a part of that. Meeting the families that are ultimately gonna live in these homes is something that sets this apart.”
A total of 3 houses are expected to be finished by the end of the academic year.
