Editor’s note: This commentary responds to the circumstances surrounding the state’s decision to stop placing homeless families in Center of Human Development programs after the agency failed to properly report allegations that employees sexually harassed a resident, one of them coercing her into sex.
As a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Human Development (CHD), I write to provide important context regarding the recent coverage of the serious incident at our Jessie’s House program.
It’s important to state clearly that the actions of the former employees are indefensible and deplorable, and they represent a clear violation of the values of our organization. That’s why CHD suspended and terminated the employment of the offenders immediately upon learning of the allegations. And CHD, in its efforts to provide the most complete and accurate accounting of events, fell short in its obligation to submit a written report (in addition to the phone notification it made) to the state within 24 hours of learning of the situation.
