The Huntsville City Council approved $4.73 million in federal funding to support the redevelopment of Huntsville Summit Apartments, which will be called Meridian Commons,
The more than $22 million project will create 100 affordable rental units for low-income seniors and disabled residents. The money approved by the council will come from federal Emergency Rental Assistance 2 (ERA2) funds.
The redevelopment is also being made possible through $14.4 million in financing from Redstone Federal Credit Union. The apartments are located at 111 Walker Avenue in northeast Huntsville.
Local nonprofit Neighborhood Concepts is leading the redevelopment. The project involves acquisition, demolition and new construction to transform the property into updated, accessible housing. Meridian Commons will serve residents ages 62 and older, or those with disabilities, offering a safe, modern and affordable option in downtown Huntsville.
“This redevelopment ensures our seniors can age in place with dignity and stability,” Huntsville Mayor Battle said. “By leveraging federal resources and private investment, the city is preserving affordable housing while revitalizing a key downtown property.”
“We are thrilled about the potential for Meridian Commons to meet critical housing needs in our community,” Mary Ellen Judah, executive director of Neighborhood Concepts, added. “We greatly appreciate the City’s significant commitment to this effort and to ensuring housing opportunities for all. This is a major milestone, but we recognize there are still hurdles to clear before the project is fully realized.”
The project is expected to start in early 2026 and be completed by mid-2027.
Temporary accommodation will be made for residents currently living in the apartment community. Neighborhood Concepts will cover costs associated with the temporary relocations. Current residents will be given the first opportunity to return to the new Meridian Commons community once construction is complete.
